The Gamecube, compared to its competitors, was underpowered. Launched in 2001, it had some of the best games of its generation on it, but most people either love it or hate it. Personally, it contains some of my favorite games ever released by Nintendo, such as Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Smash Bros. Melee, however others may say differently.
After the Dreamcast, Sega stopped making consoles. So who better to turn to with your exclusive content then your direct competition? Sega's "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" mentality got them to take their Dreamcast games and port them to the GameCube and the GameCube only, hence the Sega launch games. These launch games are All-Star Baseball 2002, Batman: Vengeance, Crazy Taxi, Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2, Luigi's Mansion, Madden NFL 2002, NHL Hitz 20-02, Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader, Super Monkey Ball, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, and Wave Race: Blue Storm.

You may have noticed that there wasn't a Mario launch game. In fact the closest thing to a Super Mario Bros. (SMB) game was Sega's Super Monkey Ball (SMB)(herr herr). Instead, we got Luigi's Mansion, which outraged many people, even though it's actually closer to a Super Mario 64 2 than Super Mario Sunshine is, as paintings have a more prominent role in the game than they do in Super Mario Sunshine, where they're not even present. After this, Nintendo decided to cater to the "casual" gamer more than the "hardcore" gamer with the Nintendo DS, DSi, and Wii.
