3d with no glasses
The 3D technology used by the 3DS has been possible for a long time, however the only seat in the theater that would allow you to see it correctly is the one in the very center, so it hadn't been used. However, it worked great in a handheld system, which is exactly what Nintendo did.
The Nintendo 3DS was released in 2011 with its launch titles being Asphalt 3D, Bust-A-Move Universe, Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D, Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, Madden NFL Football, three versions of Nintendogs + Cats, Pilotwings Resort, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D, Rayman 3D, Ridge Racer 3D, Samurai Warriors: Chronicles, Steel Diver, Super Monkey Ball 3D, Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition, The Sims 3, and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars. Along with these were two pre-loaded applications, those being the AR Games, using the cards that come with the system, and Face Raiders.

The 3D was simply a gimmick to sell more consoles. How do I know this, you may ask? Well, in 2013, on the same day that Pokemon X & Y were released, Nintendo released the 2DS, a 3DS without the 3D and without a hinge. The ironic part is that it's designed for younger children whose eyes may be hurt by the 3D effects, however it's so large that the only place they could store it is in the entirety of their pants.
